Tyler—The Caldwell Zoo has officially introduced Sprig and Sprout, the names chosen for its newest residents, a pair of red-ruffed lemur twins.

The zoo launched a public naming contest on its social media platforms, inviting the community to vote on names for the baby lemurs. After voting closed April 7, the winning names were announced.

Zoo officials said the births represent an important step in conservation efforts for the endangered species.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Sprig and Sprout to the family,” said  Paul Swen, the zoo’s director of marketing and communications for Caldwell Zoo. “The arrival of these two baby boys is a massive win for red-ruffed lemur conservation and testament to the work being done here to protect endangered species.

“Sprig and Sprout are currently tucked away behind the scenes, getting some quality bonding time with mom. They’re doing great, and we can’t wait for you to see them in person in the coming weeks.”

Redepenning said the naming contest drew strong community participation and highlighted public interest in wildlife preservation.
